FOLDED CAMERA OPTICS

Periscope Type Zoom Dual Camera

Folded optics

Folded optics enables the creation of slim cameras with unprecedented image quality. It paves the path to incorporating a wide aperture lens with large effective focal length (EFL) and total track length (TTL) without increasing the height of the camera module.

However, typical compact lens designs are characterized by a train of lens elements, in which the front lens element (closest to the object) has a small diameter and the rear lens element (closest to the image sensor) has a large lens diameter.

The largest lens diameter

The largest lens diameter determines the diameter of the lens barrel. In the case of a folded optics camera, that diameter of the lens barrel determines the height of the camera module.

To maintain a slim camera design, such designs limit the aperture stop diameter of the lens assembly and compromise the image quality, zoom experience and low-light performance of the camera module.

Corephotonics has developed and patented a new type of lens design in which all lens elements have similar diameters. The result is a lens assembly that collects the maximal amount of light for a given module height, reaching the lowest F/# for a specified lens barrel diameter.
